‘Welcome to Pyongyang’ by Charlie Crane

След втрещяващото филмче за КНДР от сериите ‘The Vice Guide to Travel’ на VBS TV (телевизията на списание Vice) за Северна Корея и абсурдните снимки на английския фотограф Чарли Крейн (Charlie Crane) впечатленията ми за “Сталинисткия Дисниленд”, пълен с тотално филмирани хора се затвърдиха и вече никой не може да ме убеди, че Северна Корея не е най-грандиозния и дълъг флаш-моб пърформънс в света. Не, сериозно. (Pyongyang = Пхенян)

How do you photograph one of the most secretive countries in the world? For Charlie Crane the answer was simple, photograph what they want you to see. If there is no possibility of getting underneath the surface then the answer was to photograph the surface itself. This series is taken from a larger body of work in Pyongyang, the capital city of North Korea. Although not commonly thought of as a holiday destination all these photographs have been taken at tourist sites throughout the city. It took over a year for Charlie to get permission to go in with his camera: he was not allowed to take his mobile phone past customs and was met by two guides who were to accompany him at all times throughout his trip. At first they appeared robotic in conversation as if reading from a script, telling of their countrys great achievements. After a few days and many polaroids the guides became more relaxed and personable. Working with such tight restrictions in a country once described as a Stalinist Disneyland was a real challenge but the result is the strongest body of work that Charlie has produced to date.

If the word ‘melancholy’ does not appear in this post, I am not doing my job. Sure the photographs of Garmonique are a little on the gloomy side, but that doesn’t stop them from being absolutely gorgeous. The color and composition of each is tremendous.

‘Disassembly’ by Todd McLellan

Sometimes the most beautiful way to view an object is not by the sum of it’s parts, or so believes Canadian artst, Tod McLellan.  His latest body of word entitled, “Disassembly,” is a series of photographs of various technological objects which he has painstakingly unbuilt then arranged in an aesthetically pleasing order.  I don’t think McLellan is trying to better our understanding of how devices work or even improve our appreciation of the meticulous nature of everyday machines, it seem to be more a celebration of entropy, reveling in the fact that everything falls apart.

The General Electric Show

Основаната през 1892 General Electric e най-голямата мултикорпорация в света (Forbes, 2010), ако не броим чекиджиите финансисти от JPMorgan Chase*, които не произвеждат нищо значимо, освен рецесии. Компанията е основана от Томас Едисон (Thomas Edison), добрият чичко изобретил кинокамерата, крушката, грамофона и още 1090 умотворения, а 287,000 й служители към момента следват светлия му пример и се занимават с производството на локомотиви, газови турбини, авиационни двигатели, медицинско оборудване и както можете да си представите с още милион неща.

Единственият ми осъзнат досег с GE засега е благодарение на тяхното The GE Show, образователен сайт, чиято цел накратко е да представя проблеми (най-често енергийни) и виждането на корпорацията за тяхното решаване. След пет епизода шоуто вече впечатлява с интерактивността и артистичната си идейност, като освен вниманието от дизайн блогосферата е номинирано и за награда Webby.

Enrique Pacheco Timelapses

Enrique Pachecho, currently residing in Iceland, completed a course in professional photography at E.F.T.I. (Madrid), specializing in documentary photography. He continued studying documentary filmmaking at the Instituto del Cine de Madrid (N.I.C.). He has been working for more than ten years in video production. His first documentary, “Al calor de las Chimeneas,” examines the problem of climate change in Spain. He has developed projects of documentary photography in Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, and in Iceland, where he teaches photography workshops since 2008. Enrique Pacheco is currently leading the RAW Iceland project, wich include photography workshops, fine art photography and filmaking.-

Winter 2010, the stunning landscape of Iceland succumb to the arctic cold. Beaches and lakes get frozen, but something unexpected is going to happen. The earth shakes, warms up, and suddenly a big crack open up at the top of the glacier Eyjafjallajokull. Lava, smoke, ash and fire comes up from the depth of the earth, melting everything in its way. Shot with HDSLR Canon 7D, 5D MarkII, and Canon & Carl Zeiss lenses.

Iceland is much more than the volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Iceland is the place where the light is made. It has the most amazing light I have ever seen, endless sunsets in summer, crazy northern lights in winter and beautiful colors all the year.

‘Gardens’ by Shinichi Maruyama

Шиничи Маруяма (Shinichi Maruyama) е японски фотограф, вече доста добре известен на хората, които имат навика да проверяват блоговете за дизайн. Накратко 42 годишният японец е започнал фотографската си кариера през ’98 година като комерсиален фотограф в една от най-големите фотографски агенции в Япония – Amana Images (stock фотография). Колкото и ужасно да звучи това там Шиничи получава техническа свобода и студийно пространство за експерименти. След това се ориентира към свободната практика, снима документална серия за Тибет, минава естествено и през рекламна агенция. Накрая обаче, съвсем на място му омръзва де се занимава с глупости и решава да разлива разни течности насам-натам и да ги снима. Не е нещо невиждано, но японците имат навика да превръщат във високо изкуство и най-прозаични неща. Първите му експерименти с хвърчащо калиграфско мастило суми не ме впечатлиха достатъчно, но последната му серия абстрактни снимки Gardens ме спечели.

В допълнение хвърлете око и на филмчето Floating на Йохан Корс и Зиги Кукщайн, в което естествено се разливат бои, ама не като другите филмчета, в които просто си тестваме хиперскъпата и гъзарска високоскоростна камера, ами иначе.
