Instal is a world-leading experimental music and sound art festival held annually in Glasgow. An identity and set of materials were developed for the 2009 festival including a poster, two booklets (a programme and set of essays), flyers, and advertising for web and print.

Arika, the promoters, are super passionate about the artists and performances they program, but are keen to challenge the sometimes impenetrable air associated with them, and engage new audiences. Consequently, the approach to the festival’s identity embraced full disclosure of information about the weekend’s performances, treated with honesty, clarity, and humour. The poster (right) collected together the most interesting facts which were then expanded on in the programme booklets (below). These included average decibel level, distance travelled, complexity of instrumentation, and ‘kicks vs. contemplation’.

Guimarães Jazz Journal 09

Atelier Martino & Jaña от Порто, Португалия са се засили със страшна сила да джазират и да ме впечатляват всеки път. След работата им за Encontros Internacionais de Musica вестничето-програма за джаз феста в Гимараеш тази година затвърдява доброто ми впечатление.  Супер типогарфия, композиране и графична сол. The Jazz 2009 Journal is a newspaper sized publication for the 2009 Guimarães Jazz event. This time, our goal was to create a classic revival object layed with rigurous typography and interesting details that would, at the same time, contrast with the energic handmade graphics of the posters, and still, not look boring.

ZIP Design Studio

Лондонското ZIP Studio е екип от 7 човека, които работят по малки и големи проекти.  Правили са една от моите любими чисто типографски обложки – тази на Rolling Stones, Rolled Gold. Самият дизайн е на Алекс Трочът (2), но явно е по тяхно задание. Между другото, правили са неща и за Groove Armada, логото и разни обложки. Работили са и за култовите TechDeck фингърбордчета. Като цяло ме вчепатлиха силно и заслужават няколко минути.

James Blake

Още един трак, който съм засичал по миксове, дело на Джеймс Блейк (James Blake), издаден от Лондонския лейбъл Hemlock Recordings (HEK004).

James Blake – Air and Lack Thereof

Splicing together a weird menagerie of explosive drums, pitch bent synths and wholly memorable vocal samples, Blake serves up a delicious A-side in “Air and Lack Thereof.” The peaky vocals and array of synthesized woodwinds spark a perfect relationship, while simultaneously holding true to the bass aesthetic Untold has set out with his two solo Hemlock releases. Blake rides the basslines low and EQs them so they peak at the groin, and rise up into your diaphragm when played up loud.

Joy Orbison – Hyph Mongo

Едно приятно тракче, пише се за дъбстеп, но всъщност си е миш-машец. Сега като го чух за втори път ми хареса повече и реших да споделя. Със сигурност не е нещо, което бих пуснал на парти в България, но за лична употреба е доста приятен.

При положение, че създателят му са го слушали допреди 2 месеца само майка му и гаджето му е хубаво че  стига и до нас, благодарение на някоя наблюдателна хиена от Hoflush Recordings, които услужливо са го преснали на винили, и то на 09.09.09 – мега монументално, а!
